| Team meetings - Regardless of who initiates the
process, the first step is the meeting of the Team, which
consists of school personnel, the parents, the child if old enough, and outside
specialists if called in to consult. Dr. Brefach frequently attends Team
meetings to present the results of the neuropsychological
evaluation and her specific recommendations, to advocate for the
child's academic/emotional needs, and to provide professional support for the parents.
Educational advocates and/or legal counsel may also attend with
the parents, and Dr. Brefach will consult with the other
professionals to coordinate the points being presented. The Team attempts to work by
consensus to determine eligibility for special services, and - if eligible - to
define those special services and specify them in an individualized education
plan (IEP). The parents have specific legal rights, and may challenge
determination of eligibility and/or the IEP. This process is discussed in
detail in the IEP
Process Guide available on the Massachusetts Department of Education Special
Education web site,

| Program evaluation - If there is a question about the
appropriateness of any particular program for a child, once Dr.
Brefach thoroughly understands his or her needs she can then
evaluate the program for how well it matches those needs.
She will not only review the stated approach and capabilities of
the program, but will - as appropriate - enter the classroom(s)
and observe the program as it actually operates. She may
recommend accepting the program, accepting the program
contingent on modifications, or rejecting the program. If
there is a question about placement, she may need to review more
than one program in this fashion. |
